A version of a paper shared publicly, often before peer review. Results may change before publication.

Preprints are posted on servers such as arXiv, bioRxiv and PsyArXiv. Screening on these servers isn’t the same as peer review, so treat findings with more caution. If the paper has since been published in a journal, cite the published version.

APA format for a preprint:

Author, A. A. (Year). Title of preprint. Server Name. https://doi.org/xxxxx

arXiv gives its papers DOIs that start with 10.48550, which PaperCitation can look up.
