How to cite a journal article in Chicago 18

Last reviewed , against the official sources listed below.

Chicago has two systems, and the format depends on which one your instructor asks for. See Chicago style if you aren’t sure.

Notes and bibliography

Each citation is a numbered note, and a bibliography at the end lists the sources.

Note: First Last, “Title of the Article,” Journal Name volume, no. issue (Year): page, DOI.

3. Nora Lindquist, “Learning from Failure in Group Projects,” Journal of Student Learning 14, no. 2 (2023): 120, https://doi.org/10.1234/jsl.2023.0142.

Bibliography: Last, First. “Title of the Article.” Journal Name volume, no. issue (Year): page range. DOI.

Lindquist, Nora. “Learning from Failure in Group Projects.” Journal of Student Learning 14, no. 2 (2023): 112–28. https://doi.org/10.1234/jsl.2023.0142.

  • In the note, the page is the one you used. In the bibliography, it is the article’s full page range.
  • Shortened note. A later citation of the same source uses the author’s surname, a short title in quotation marks, and the page: 7. Lindquist, “Learning from Failure,” 118.
  • Punctuation. Notes separate elements with commas and end with a period. Bibliography elements end with periods. The volume and issue follow the journal name with no “p.” or “pp.”, and the page range follows a colon.

Author-date

The in-text citation is the author’s last name and the year, with the page after a comma if you cite one: (Lindquist 2023, 120). The reference list entry:

Last, First. Year. “Title of the Article.” Journal Name volume (issue): page range. DOI.

Lindquist, Nora. 2023. “Learning from Failure in Group Projects.” Journal of Student Learning 14 (2): 112–28. https://doi.org/10.1234/jsl.2023.0142.

Check before you submit

  • Which system? Your instructor decides. If the assignment only says “Chicago,” ask which one.
  • Several authors. In the bibliography or reference list, list up to six authors; for more than six, list the first three followed by “et al.” For three or more authors, the author-date in-text citation names only the first author followed by “et al.”
  • PaperCitation generates the author-date form, not notes. See the Chicago citation generator.
