How to cite a YouTube video in APA 7
Reference format
Account Name. (Year, Month Day). Title of video [Video]. YouTube. URL
Lab Notes Weekly. (2025, February 14). How enzymes speed up reactions [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXAMPLE
- The author is the account that uploaded the video, written as the channel name appears.
- If the uploader isn’t the person who made the video, say so in your text. Better still, look for a copy on the creator’s own channel or site and cite that.
- The date is the day the video was uploaded.
- The title is in italics, followed by [Video] in square brackets.
- Then write YouTube and the video’s URL.
In-text citations
- Parenthetical: (Lab Notes Weekly, 2025)
- Narrative: Lab Notes Weekly (2025)
If you quote someone who speaks in the video, name them in your sentence but still cite the video under the uploader’s name.
Quoting a video: add a timestamp
Videos don’t have page numbers, so give the time where the quote starts:
(Lab Notes Weekly, 2025, 3:07)
Citing a whole channel
A channel has no single date, so use “n.d.” and add the date you viewed it.
Account Name. (n.d.). Title of channel [YouTube channel]. YouTube. Retrieved Month Day, Year, from URL
The same format works for videos on other sites such as Vimeo. Just replace “YouTube” with the site’s name.
