APA 7
How to cite a website with no author in APA 7
First, look for a group author
Most pages without a person’s name still have an author: the organization that published them. A health page from the World Health Organization, for example, has the World Health Organization as its author.
Organization Name. (Year, Month Day). Title of page. URL
World Wildlife Example Trust. (2024, June 5). Why wetlands matter. https://www.example.org/wetlands
When the author and the website have the same name, leave the site name out, as above.
When there really is no author
Move the title to the front, where the author would go.
Title of page. (Year, Month Day). Site Name. URL
Tips for managing exam stress. (2024, May 2). Campus Wellness Hub. https://www.example.org/exam-stress
- Don’t write “Anonymous” unless the page is actually signed that way.
- The title is in italics and sentence case.
- Use the most specific date the page gives. A “last updated” date counts only if it applies to the part you’re citing. If there’s no date, write (n.d.).
Do you need a retrieval date?
Usually not. Add “Retrieved Month Day, Year, from” before the URL only when the page is designed to change over time and isn’t archived.
In-text citations
With a group author, cite the organization:
- (World Wildlife Example Trust, 2024) or World Wildlife Example Trust (2024)
With no author, use the title in place of the author and give the year only:
- (Tips for Managing Exam Stress, 2024) or Tips for Managing Exam Stress (2024)
If a group has a well-known abbreviation, spell it out the first time and add the abbreviation in brackets, then use the short form afterward: (Northfield Water Authority [NWA], 2020), then (NWA, 2020).
