How to cite a news article in APA 7

Last reviewed , against the official sources listed below.

Which format to use depends on where the article was published. Newspapers and magazines have their own format. A news website that isn’t a newspaper or magazine uses the webpage format.

Reference list format

Author, A. A. (Year, Month Day). Title of the article in sentence case. Name of Newspaper, page(s). URL

Reyes, T. (2025, September 3). City council votes to keep the downtown library open. The Harbor Gazette. https://example.org/library-vote

  • Author. Surname first, then initials.
  • Date. Year, month and day, in parentheses. The month is written out in full.
  • Article title. Sentence case, with no italics and no quotation marks.
  • Newspaper name. Italic, in title case.
  • Page numbers. Only for a print article. Give the pages after the newspaper name with no “p.” or “pp.” If there are no page numbers, the reference ends with the newspaper’s name.
  • URL. For an online article, add the address at the end if it works for readers.

Newspaper or news website?

APA’s guide is this: if the outlet calls itself a newspaper or magazine, or you can subscribe to a print edition, use the newspaper or magazine format. A news website with no print edition, such as a broadcaster’s site or a news-only web outlet, uses the webpage format. See citing a webpage in APA 7.

In-text citation

Use the author and year: (Reyes, 2025) or Reyes (2025) reported that…

If there is no author

When the article has no named author, the reference begins with the title, and the in-text citation uses a short version of the title in quotation marks. APA’s page on missing reference information covers this.

Check before you submit

  • Page numbers. Give them only if you read the print version. For an online article, end with the URL.
